Gorillaz: What Makes Them So Appealing?

For the past month I’ve been hooked up to the essential Gorillaz playlist on Spotify like someone on an IV machine. I wondered “What makes me like them? I mean…What has me hooked and invested instead of just listening to a few songs of theirs and giving it no passing thought?” So I decided to think about that. This is what I think makes Gorillaz so appealing:

The Music: The way Gorillaz is able to fuse many genres—Alternative, Rock, Electro, Pop, Hip Hop, Rap, and EDM—there’s something there for everyone. If one genre is your favorite, you’ll probably listen to an artist who makes music in that genre. But Gorillaz blend so many genres in a successful way that it’s pretty much universal in its appeal.

The Lore: This one is unique. Gorillaz, the digital band with characters, has a story. Through each “phase” new plots are given and other media like animated shorts, comics, and music videos explain the story to accompany the music. It’s very interesting to see what’s going on in the weird world of Gorillaz as you bump to the music.

In conclusion, Gorillaz is so fun because they make many types of music and blend them successfully with a story and cast of characters. Alright I’m gonna go listen to Song Machine again!
